  Futon (foot-ahn) is a Japanese word meaning "bedroll". The Japanese futon is a thin matt laid on the floor like a sleeping bag except you lay on it, not in it. The Japanese have been using them for centuries. The recent arrival adapted for the west has been to make the mattress thicker and putting it on some type of sofa or bed frame. The result is a sofa sleeper, but better than the traditional sofa sleeper with the bar jabbing you down your back. Yes east meets west with today's futon.
